Lake Atitlán

Panajachel

Westward 32km along highway from Chimaltenango, you pass the turnoff for the back road to Lago de Atitlán via Patziciía and Patzún. If you travel another 40Km westward along the interamericana from tecpán, you come to the highway junction of LOS ENCUENTROS. There is an ersatz town here, based on the presence of people waiting to catch busses. The road to the right heads north to Chichicastenango and Santa Cruz del Quiché. From the Interamericana a road to left descends 12Km to Sololá, capital of the department of the same name and then 8km more to Panajachel, on the shores of Lago de Atitlán.
Lago de Atitlan is often placid and beautiful early in the day, which is the best time for swimming, though Pana's. One of the world's most spectacular locates period. Diamond splatters dance across the water, fertile hills provide the landscape with colour, and over everything loom the powerful volcanoes permeating the entire lake with a mysterious beauty. The place never looks the same way twice, offering a distinct face and feeling from different vantage points.
